02 – Internationalization

Same as Situm SDK, Situm WYF supports internationalization. Situm WYF internationalizes three elements:

UI and turn-by-turn indications #

Currently, the following languages are available: English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Arabic, Turkish, Hebrew and Portuguese. But while Situm SDK only supports internationalization of the turn-by-turn indications, Situm WYF provides translations of the whole interface. Additionally, the UI is adapted to work with Right-To-Left languages, such as Arabic.

In this Section, we show you how you can display Situm WYF in any of these languages within your application. If you have further language requirements, please let us know and we can show you how to achieve them.

Android internationalization #

No special configurations are required in Android. Situm WYF will detect the locale language of the smartphone and display all the texts in that language, as long as it is one of the supported ones. Otherwise, English will be used as a fallback.

iOS internationalization #

On the contrary, iOS requires a bit more work on your side to be able to display Situm WYF in your locale language. Essentially, you will need to enable all the desired languages in your app’s configuration. To do so, you will need to provide at least one localized file (for your app’s strings) for each language. If you do not have any localized strings in your app for that language, an empty strings will suffice.

First, you will need to enable a new language in your app. To do so, in XCode you will need to go to “Project” (1), then to “Info” (2) and finally to “Localizations” (3). In the “Localizations” section, click on the “+” icon to add a new language (or as many as you need), and select the target language from the dropdown menu.

If your app has some localized resources (not related to Situm WYF), XCode will ask you to localize them. You should say yes, otherwise the translations of Situm WYF will not show for this language. When you do, you should see on the “Resources” column (second column in the Localizations section) at least 1 file per localized language.

If your app does not have localized resources in the desired language, you will not see any localized file in the “Resources” column for that particular language. Anyway, you can add an empty strings file and localize it in the target language. To do so, click in “File” and then on “Show file inspector in right panel”. Finally, under the “Localization” section click on “Localize”.

Then, add your empty “Strings file”.

Finally, you should enable all the desired languages (English & Spanish as per our example) under the Localization subsection:

Buildings, POIs and Floors #

Please note! Building, POI and Floor internationalization works in Situm WYF (Android v>= 0.21.0, iOS v>= 0.17.0, React Native v>=0.1.6 and Capacitor 0.9.3)

Situm supports internationalization of some cartography elements:

  • Building: name, address and information.
  • Floor: name.
  • POI: name and information.

You may configure this information in different languages using Situm Dashboard as explained here. Once you do, Situm WYF will show these elements translated in the relevant UI screens, using the smartphone locale language. If the locale language is not specified by a custom-field, English will be used as a fallback. The following example shows how this will look like:

POI name, floor name and building name is in English.
When we change the locale to Spanish, POI, floor and building name appear in Spanish

Please refer to this Situm SDK example to understand better how internationalization works underneath.
