POI Categories #
One of the main strengths of our Map Viewer lies in the configurability of the POIs that will be displayed. In addition to editing them individually, Situm’s system offers users the possibility of managing them by means of POI categories.
Through this functionality, we can manage aspects for multiple POIs—such as icons, custom_fields—and more advanced features, like parent categories, in a simple, fast and intuitive way.
How to set a POI category
When creating a POI in our Map Editor you can configure basic fields such as its name, information, and the floor on which it is located, among others; you can also choose the category to which you wish to add this POI at the time of its creation, as we can see in the next screenshot:

POI Categories Configuration Panel
In order to access the configuration panel for the POI categories, go to your Situm Dashboard and got to “My organization” (as shown in the following screenshot).
In this menu we can edit different aspects related to POIs, such as creating categories, editing existing ones, modifying the name or the icon

Under “My Organization” page , you will see the following list of menus and available options; in this case we will focus on accessing the POI Categories section.

On the POI Categories screen, you will notice that multiples categories are already present by default, covering the most common types of POIs present in any building.

In the screenshot above, you can see 4 different buttons are highlighted. Let’’s go over them:
- Edit button (1): This buttons allows you to edit the POI category.
- Delete button (2): Used to delete the category from your list.
- Catalog button(3): Opens the Catalog interface. The Catalog contains a list of the most common categories used in various types of buildings which you can easily import into your categories list.
- New button (4): Allows you to create a POI category from scratch.
Category edition
In the edition menu, you can change the basic information of the category (code, name displayed in English and Spanish, icons) along with the Parent Category and the custom fields.
Catalog
We provide a broad and extensive catalog of POI Categories which you can import into your organization simply by selecting those that interest you and clicking the “Import” button on the bottom-right corner. Once you do this, they should appear in your organization’’s list, and you are free to edit them as you please.
Category creation
In addition to all of the above, you can also create your own categories from scratch. Keep in mind that you will hace to fill all the fields marked with an asterisk in order to be able to create it.
POI Categories – Advanced Use #
Up to now, we have examined the basic level of organizing POIs through POI Category, but the system allows you to go deeper into this configuration by establishing Parent Categories. The concept of Parent Categories is as simple as creating a hierarchical nesting of categories, so that within a single POI category you can establish subgroups to fine-tune any behavior that may be of interest. Each category includes all the custom fields of the Parent Category (and the subsequent parent categories).
Let’s look at a simple example: In our building, we have a POI category called “Shop” which has a custom field detailing the opening and closing hours. If we now create a category called “Toy Shop” which has the “Shop” category as its parent, the new POI category will have the opening-closing hours custom field. If we add a custom field to the Toy category, “recommended age” for example, and we create a new POI category called “Board games” that uses the “Toy Shop” category as its parent, this new category will include both the opening-closing hours and the recommended age custom field, as well as the ones you define.

In this context, we could create a POI Category of type Toy Shop and set the previously mentioned Shop as its Parent Category, and then implement any change that affects only the POIs belonging to this Toy Shop subcategory, without affecting the rest of the Shop-type POIs. This would allow us—relying on the configuration of Special custom-fields—to make adjustments as detailed as operating hours for certain POI subcategories, set up custom pop-ups, and so forth, without that change affecting all of the POIs included in a category.
