Seven terms related to indoor positioning systems you should know

A small collection of terms that you may not know about Real Time Location Systems

Are you familiar with the terms used in the indoor location world? Today, we bring you a small collection of 7 words that you often hear but you might not know exactly what they mean.

Beacon

A beacon is a device designed to continuously emit a Wi-Fi or BLE signal and a unique identifier in order to work as a landmark. Its typical working range can be up to 100 metres. This gadget can be of different sizes and forms, although usually it’s a little bigger than a coin. It has a small battery that allows it to operate for several years (usually up to two years).  A beacon is also known as an iBeacon which an Apple Trademark. Do you want to know more?

Geolocation

Geolocation is the process which involves the computation of the geographical positioning of an element in terrestrial coordinates, i.e. latitude and longitude. In the case of positioning inside a building, the terms indoor localization and indoor positioning are much more frequent than indoor geolocation. Do you want to know more?

Geomarketing

Geomarketing refers to a new marketing technology that uses indoor location systems to offer promotions to the consumers depending on their physical location. Its goals are increasing the efficiency and return of marketing campaigns. Do you want to know more?

GPS

As you know, GPS, stands for Global Positioning System, treats itself about the system of more widespread positioning and that it allows to realize a geo-positioning by means of the triangulation of the signs of diverse satellites. These signs are not capable of crossing physical obstacles as buildings, for this system does not work in interiors. Do you want to know more?

IPS

IPS or Indoor Positioning System alludes to indoor positioning or location systems, orientated to big and closed surfaces. Easier, it’s a GPS to use inside buildings. Do you want to know more?

IPIN

Related to the last term we find IPIN or Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation, to talk about IPS technology that, besides, includes navigation service.

LBS

We use LBS to talk about location based services. These services need a location and a map to be able to be developed and they are, for example, guided routes, positioning marketing or products search in a hypermarkets. It includes outdoors and indoors location services. Do you want to know more?
