Aena Maps: passenger guidance with Situm’s indoor positioning platform, SDK, and API Rest

With AENA Maps, AENA and Telefónica’s application developed with Carto technology and Situm’s indoor platform, indoor location for airports is turned around. The Spanish airport network is positioned as a world reference in the implementation of solutions for passenger guidance. The SDKs and API Rest included in Situm IPS indoor location platform have been key to the development of the application.

AENA Maps with Situm indoor location for airports

Telefónica’s Multisensorial Geolocation solution, developed in collaboration with Situm, was presented during MWC 2016. The same year, Situm launched together with Carto DB, a reference in location intelligence, an application to visualize the flow of visitors inside shopping centres. Since then, the multiple projects developed by the three companies have led them to become key players in the global market for indoor positioning-based solutions. However, no other project has had the magnitude of AENA Maps. AENA’s solution is a milestone for indoor navigation and an example of the integration of solutions developed by different companies.

This solution is the result of a project included in the digitalisation process that the airport manager and the telecommunications operator are jointly implementing to offer innovative solutions to passengers.

  • Telefónica is collaborating in AENA’s Digital Transformation projec, which made this action one of the pillars of its Strategic Plan.
  • Carto DB has participated in the project through cartographic enrichment, route development, and the logic and coordination of the entire solution.
  • Situm has provided geopositioning and tools from its Situm IPS indoor positioning platform, which includes the SDK for integration into maximum precision indoor location apps with minimal dedicated infrastructure.

With AENA Maps, we are turning around indoor geolocation and positioning the Spanish airport network as a world reference in the implementation of indoor navigation solutions for passengers.

María Jesús Almazor, Telefónica España CEO, points out the importance of this new step:

“With the digitization of services and companies, we have the opportunity to improve the lives of citizens and society in general. AENA’s shift towards a more digital model will provide an opportunity to offer passengers additional experiences that go beyond just the use of the facilities to access flights”.

During this process, the coordination between Telefónica, Carto, and Situm, as well as the integration of their solutions, has been essential.
